Breaking rules

Rajkummar Rao and Wamiqa Gabbi’s Bhool Chuk Maaf is set to drop on Prime Video today. The film streams on OTT just two weeks after its theatrical release. What makes this notable is the shorter-than-usual gap between theatrical and OTT release. While the industry norm typically sees an eight-week wait, the makers of this film have chosen to release it online sooner. The film initially faced several hurdles, where the makers decided to skip a theatrical release amid India-Pakistan tensions. Despite this, the film was eventually released in cinemas and has reportedly grossed R60.60 crore at the box office.

Pankaj Tripathi and Aditi Rao Hydari are set to star in the upcoming family drama Parivarik ManuRanjan, directed by Varun V Sharma. The film’s shoot began in Lucknow on June 5, with the lead actors sharing photos from the set on social media. Opening about the film, Pankaj said, “There was something so charmingly simple and yet irresistibly funny about the script that I couldn’t say no.” Aditi, on the other hand, expressed her excitement, stating, “When I read the script, I smiled through it. Getting to work with Pankaj sir is going to be a treat.” The filmmaker, Varun, described the film as “rooted in chaos and the comedy of life.”
‘Artistic and moral protest’
Diljit Dosanjh in Punjab ’95
Punjab ’95, starring Diljit Dosanjh and directed by Honey Trehan, had a private screening at the recently concluded Cannes Film Festival after facing repeated hurdles back home. The film was initially set for a high-profile première at Toronto International Film Festival in 2023 but was reportedly withdrawn at the last minute due to pressure from the Indian authorities. Insiders claim the Central Board of Film Certification raised red flags, allegedly over concerns tied to ongoing diplomatic tensions between India and Canada — despite the film not addressing Sikh separatism directly. A February 2025 release was in the works but has since been scrapped. With theatrical prospects uncertain, the filmmaker continues to rely on international festival screenings. However, he fears the film might only be cleared after enforcing the 127 cuts reportedly requested. Both Honey and Diljit have pledged to remove their names from the credits if such edits are imposed, calling it an act of artistic and moral protest.
