Filmmaker Anurag Kashyap has announced plans to relocate from Mumbai, expressing disappointment with the current state of the Hindi film industry. In a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter India, Kashyap shared his growing admiration for Malayalam cinema, which he sees as a beacon of creativity and collaboration, in contrast to Bollywood’s perceived preoccupation with blockbusters and star culture.Kashyap, whose latest Malayalam-language film Rifle Club premiered to critical acclaim, highlighted his experience at the International Film Festival of Kerala, where he felt overwhelmed by the camaraderie and creative freedom among filmmakers. “They [Malayalam filmmakers] take influences from around the world and localize them into something uniquely their own,” he noted, referencing works like Manjummel Boys. The director criticized the Hindi film industry for prioritizing profits over creativity. “The joy of filmmaking is sucked out,” he lamented, revealing that five of his films remain unreleased, including Kennedy, which premiered at Cannes in 2023. Kashyap attributed these delays to studio decisions focused solely on profit margins.Recalling his early days in Bollywood, Kashyap described a more collaborative and grounded approach to filmmaking. He contrasted this with today’s industry, which he claims is consumed by vanity and the pursuit of star treatment, especially after the rise of streaming platforms. His decision to move south stems from a desire to work in an environment where creativity thrives. “Malayalam filmmakers are doing what we used to do. I envy them,” he said, adding, “Next year, I’m moving out of Bombay.”Kashyap also acknowledged how negativity in recent years had affected him, even making him consider quitting filmmaking. However, he concluded, “Now it doesn’t affect me. I just want to keep making films.” Published – December 31, 2024 10:25 am IST
