Folk artist and Padmashri award recipient Sukri Bommagowda, also known for her anti-liquor protest, breathed her last at her residence in Badageri village of Ankola taluk in Uttara Kannada on Thursday.

Better known as Sukrajji, the 88-year-old artist was not well for the past few months. Recently, she returned home after receiving treatment at a private hospital in Mangaluru.Having recovered a bit, she had spent the day chatting with her kith and kin on Wednesday. She breathed her last during the early hours of Thursday, family sources said.Sukrajji was known for singing Halakki folk songs. She had launched a movement against the liquor menace in her village.She had received several awards, including Nadoja award in 2006. In 2017, she was honoured with the Padmashri award by the Union government.MournedMinister for Fisheries, Port and Inland Transport Mankal Vaidya paid his last respects to Sukri Bommagowda on Thursday.He was accompanied by MLA Satish Sail, Deputy Commissioner of Uttara Kannada K. Lakshmipriya and others.In his condolence post on X, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah said that music was the life of Sukrajji and her demise was a great loss to the cultural world.
