Luca Guadagnino is in discussions to direct Artificial, a feature film based on the leadership crisis at OpenAI in 2023. The project is being developed by Amazon MGM Studios with Heyday Films’ David Heyman and Jeffrey Clifford producing. Simon Rich has written the screenplay and will also serve as producer.Artificial will depict the brief but widely reported period in late 2023 when OpenAI co-founder and CEO Sam Altman was removed from his position by the company’s board, only to return five days later following internal and public pressure. The film is expected to begin production this summer, with San Francisco and Italy among the planned shooting locations.According to The Hollywood Reporter, casting discussions are underway. Andrew Garfield is being considered to play Sam Altman. Monica Barbaro, known for her role in A Complete Unknown, may portray Mira Murati, OpenAI’s chief technology officer. Yura Borisov, most recently seen in Anora, is said to be in the mix to play Ilya Sutskever, a co-founder who played a key role in the leadership change. This would be Guadagnino’s third collaboration with Amazon MGM. He directed Challengers, which released last year, and After the Hunt, starring Julia Roberts and Andrew Garfield, scheduled for release on October 10.
Guadagnino had previously been attached to direct Sgt. Rock, a World War II film for DC. That project, which was set to star Colin Farrell, has been put on hold after scheduling changes. No official casting or production start date has been confirmed, but sources indicate Amazon is moving quickly to finalise deals.
