Veteran Kannada actor Sarigama Viji passed away at 77 at a private hospital in Bengaluru on January 15, 2024. The actor, who was admitted to the hospital for the treatment of lung infection, succumbed to multiple organ failure. He is survived by his two sons.Viji, who began his journey in the Kannada film industry more than four decades ago, acted in over 250 movies. He made his debut with Beluvalada Madilalli (1975). With a unique voice and a fine comic timing, Viji was cast in several humorous roles.Born as R Vijaykumar, the actor began his journey in theatre. His most prominent play was Samsaradalli Sarigama, earning him the name ‘Sarigama Viji’. Part of the theatre group named Yashasvi, he directed and starred in the play that was staged more than 1300 times across several cities, including Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Chennai, Delhi and Mumbai.Apart from acting, Viji also co-directed more than 50 Kannada films. Viji was also a respected name in the television circuit.
